The live demo is a lightweight web version of the Weed Radar app. Right in your browser, it shows you where public cannabis consumption in Germany is off-limits because of the statutory ban zones — no installation required.
The whole computation — classifying places, the 100‑metre buffer and distance measurement — runs entirely in your browser. No location data is transmitted to us.
Since 1 April 2024, cannabis in Germany has been governed by the Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG). Possession and consumption are permitted for adults within certain limits — but not everywhere. Section 5 of the KCanG prohibits public consumption at sensitive places and in their immediate vicinity.
“Within sight” is legally defined as a distance of less than 100 metres from the respective entrance. These are exactly the 100‑metre radii the map draws in red. In addition, consumption is prohibited in pedestrian zones between 7am and 8pm — which is why the demo only shows those zones during that time window.
Section 5(1) of the KCanG explicitly names four categories, each surrounded by a 100‑metre radius:
Beyond that, the demo also marks — as a precaution — further places where consumption is often not permitted or whose surroundings are sensitive, such as universities and colleges, military sites and train stations and platforms (which usually have their own house rules). These extra markings are for orientation and deliberately go beyond the strict wording of the law.
The places shown come from OpenStreetMap and are queried live via the Overpass API (licence: ODbL). OpenStreetMap is a map maintained by volunteers — which means individual facilities may be missing, mistagged or out of date. The map can therefore never guarantee completeness.

No. Adults may possess and consume cannabis within certain limits, but public consumption is prohibited in the ban zones described here as well as at certain times in pedestrian zones.
The demo draws a 100‑metre buffer around the places known from OpenStreetMap. Because the underlying geodata can contain inaccuracies, treat the boundaries as orientation, not as a metre-precise figure.
